Spotlight

In my second year of study, I had the incredible opportunity to create a Spotlight, a short documentary focused on an inspiring individual. From start to finish, my group and I experienced the entire filmmaking process. We started with dividing roles; I took on audio and lighting, while the rest of the team covered other crucial aspects. Then came the research and the search for the perfect protagonist. After much deliberation, we landed on an amazing subject: Frens Frijns, the Director of Poppodium 013 in Tilburg.

Once we secured a filming date, we ensured all the pre-production documents were in place. And then, the big day arrived! Stepping into 013 with our cameras and gear was an electrifying moment, and Frens welcomed us with open arms.. We got a full behind-the-scenes tour, set up our shots, and captured plenty of B-roll to enrich our story. What really stood out was how effortlessly Frens interacted with his team. As the director, he had the power to make things happen, and watching him in his element was both inspiring and eye-opening.

That day taught me so much, not just about filming or audio, but about storytelling, teamwork, and the importance of adaptability. I learned how to mix technical skills with creativity and how to stay one step ahead of what the production needed, and most importantly, how to bring someone’s story to life in a way that truly resonates.

Looking back, it was an unforgettable experience. Being able to capture Frens’ world and showcase his passion for music and leadership was an absolute joy. I loved every second of it.
